LHC seeks report on garbage burning near Paragon City

LAHORE, Jun 08 (APP): The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday sought a report from Rescue 1122 Director General Dr. Rizwan Naseer regarding pollution caused by the burning of garbage behind a private housing society and ordered strict action against those involved in illegal dumping.
Justice Shahid Karim heard petitions filed by Haroon Farooq and others concerning measures to control smog and environmental pollution.
During the hearing, a member of the Judicial Commission submitted a report on pollution caused by garbage burning near Paragon City. The report stated that the Environment Department had made significant efforts to eliminate the illegal dumping site and had permanently deployed teams at the location to monitor the situation.
The court was informed that dumping of waste near Paragon City had been stopped and preventive measures were being implemented to avoid further environmental damage.
A law officer representing the Punjab government told the court that several FIRs had previously been registered against the contractor involved in the illegal dumping. Expressing displeasure, Justice Karim questioned why the contractor had not yet been arrested and directed the police to summon him immediately.
The court further ordered authorities to obtain an affidavit from the contractor, undertaking that he would not dump waste at the illegal site in the future. The judge observed that any recurrence of such violations would not be tolerated.
The court also directed the Deputy Commissioner to install signboards clearly indicating that the location is not an authorized dumping site.
Additionally, the relevant SHO was ordered to register FIRs against individuals found dumping waste in the area.
The hearing was adjourned until June 11.
