ISLAMABAD, Jun 08 (APP):As temperatures continue to soar in the federal capital, mint lemonade has emerged as the preferred summer beverage in households across Islamabad, providing residents with a refreshing, affordable, and healthier way to beat the heat.
Prepared with fresh lemons, mint leaves, sugar, and chilled water, the traditional drink is increasingly replacing carbonated soft drinks during the ongoing summer season.
Families say the beverage not only quenches thirst but also provides instant relief from the intense heat and humidity.
Fruit vendors and grocery shop owners in various markets across the city have reported a significant increase in the demand for lemons and fresh mint over the past several weeks.
Talking to APP, Aslam, a fruit vendor at Karachi Company Market, said that people are purchasing lemons and mint in larger quantities, especially before weekends, family gatherings, and social events. “The demand has nearly doubled compared to the start of the season,” he added.
Residents say mint lemonade has become a daily household essential during the scorching weather.
Arifa, a resident of G-10, told APP that with electricity outages and extreme temperatures, a glass of chilled mint lemonade provides immediate refreshment and a cooling effect.
“It is inexpensive, easy to prepare, and loved by every member of the family,” she said.
Another resident, Raza from F-11, told APP that many families are now opting for natural beverages instead of commercially produced soft drinks.
“People have become more health-conscious. Mint lemonade is not only refreshing but also feels much healthier than sugary sodas,” he added.
Health experts have also endorsed the growing trend.
Talking to APP, Dr. Saba, a nutritionist at a private clinic in G-8, said mint lemonade serves as a healthier alternative to carbonated beverages as it helps maintain hydration, supports digestion, and provides a cooling effect during periods of extreme heat.
“Natural drinks made from fresh ingredients help replenish fluids and reduce the risk of dehydration,” she explained.
She advised citizens to increase their water intake and consume seasonal fruits and natural beverages to remain healthy during the summer months.
Many young people are also experimenting with homemade variations of the drink by adding soda water, cucumber slices, honey, or crushed ice, transforming mint lemonade into a seasonal favourite among families and social circles.
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast continued hot and dry weather in Islamabad in the coming days. Health authorities have advised citizens to adopt preventive measures, avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, and increase fluid intake to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
