PPAF, PMYP unite for nationwide climate action on World Environment Day

ISLAMABAD, Jun 05 (APP): The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme (PMYP) joined hands to spearhead a nationwide climate action campaign marking World Environment Day 2026, mobilizing communities across Pakistan through more than 250 events aimed at fostering environmental stewardship, climate resilience and sustainable development.
The initiative, being implemented in partnership with Paigham-e-Pakistan and the Provincial Centres of Excellence on Countering Violent Extremism (CECVE), spans all provinces as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The campaign seeks to engage youth, local communities, educational institutions, madaris, civil society organisations and government bodies in collective efforts to promote a greener and more environmentally conscious Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference here Friday, PPAF Chief Executive Officer Nadir Gul Barech said the nationwide drive reflects a shared commitment to advancing climate awareness and encouraging community-led solutions to environmental challenges through tree plantation campaigns, awareness activities and climate-resilient infrastructure projects.
The PPAF chief said the organization’s interventions are aligned with Pakistan’s National Adaptation Plan and support the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, with a strategic focus on ecosystem restoration, disaster risk reduction, climate-resilient infrastructure and green economic growth.
Highlighting the organization’s achievements, Mr Barech said PPAF-supported communities have planted more than 371,000 trees, including over 162,000 olive saplings, contributing significantly to biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration and landscape restoration.
He added that environmental education and climate risk reduction programmes had strengthened the capacities of community members, educators, local government representatives and service providers.
He further noted that investments in water resource management and climate-resilient infrastructure, including delay action dams, water harvesting ponds, irrigation networks and drinking water schemes, had helped conserve approximately 2.23 million cubic metres of water. These initiatives have brought more than 23,000 acres of land under cultivation and benefited over 71,000 farming households, he expressed.
Mr Barech further told the media that PPAF had also constructed 80 kilometres of flood protection walls to safeguard vulnerable populations from climate-induced hazards, while establishing 167 Village Disaster Management Committees and 200 Community Emergency Response Teams. More than 60,000 individuals have received training in disaster preparedness and emergency response, substantially enhancing local resilience, he added.
On the green growth front, he said renewable energy projects supported by PPAF have generated more than 16 megawatts of clean energy, benefiting hundreds of thousands of people while reducing carbon emissions.
He said climate-smart agriculture, sustainable livestock management, green skills development and support for small and medium-sized enterprises are creating new livelihood opportunities and strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities across the country.
