PESHAWAR, Jun 04 (APP): In a strong endorsement of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s pioneering efforts in forest restoration and climate resilience, Sebastian Jacobi, Country Director of KfW Development Bank, accompanied by Imran Khan, Senior Officer KfW, called on the project director, billion trees afforestation support project (BTASP) and director institutionalization & human resource development and management (I&HRD&M) at his office in Peshawar following a high-level meeting with the additional chief secretary planning & development department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Earlier, during the meeting with the Additional Chief Secretary P&D, the remarkable achievements of the Billion Trees Afforestation Support Project were reviewed in detail. The Additional Chief Secretary highly appreciated the invaluable support extended by KfW and commended the outstanding performance, dedication, and professionalism of the BTASP Project Management Unit (PMU) in successfully implementing one of the province’s most significant environmental and climate initiatives.
During the subsequent meeting at the HRD Directorate, both sides held comprehensive discussions on the progress, achievements, lessons learned, and future prospects of the Billion Trees Afforestation Support Project, which is being implemented by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forest Department with financial support from the German Government through KfW Development Bank.
The deliberations focused on the project’s contribution to restoring degraded forest landscapes, enhancing biodiversity conservation, strengthening ecosystem services, generating green employment opportunities, and improving the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities.
The participants also discussed strategies for ensuring sustainability, institutional strengthening, community participation, and scaling up successful interventions across other forest divisions of the province.
Speaking on the occasion, the Project Director expressed gratitude to KfW for its unwavering support and strategic partnership. On behalf of the Secretary, Climate Change, Forestry, Environment and Wildlife Department, he thanked the German Government and KfW Development Bank for their continued confidence in the Forest Department and for their commitment towards environmental conservation and climate action in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He further emphasized the need for expanding the successful BTASP model to additional forest divisions under a second phase of the project, enabling more communities to benefit from sustainable forest management, ecosystem restoration, and climate adaptation initiatives.
Sebastian Jacobi reaffirmed KfW’s continued commitment to supporting the forestry and climate agenda of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He described BTASP as a highly impactful and community-centric initiative that is delivering tangible environmental and socio-economic benefits.
The project has emerged as a shining example of successful international cooperation in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Jacobi revealed that the Honourable German Ambassador to Pakistan has expressed keen interest in visiting one of the BTASP project sites in the near future to witness firsthand the transformative outcomes being achieved on the ground.
He further termed BTASP as one of the most successful interventions supported by KfW in Pakistan, reflecting the shared commitment of Pakistan and Germany towards sustainable development, ecological restoration, and climate resilience.
The meeting concluded with a mutual resolve to further strengthen collaboration for protecting and expanding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s forest resources, empowering local communities, and advancing nature-based solutions to confront the growing challenges of climate change. Both sides agreed that investments in forests today are investments in a greener, safer, and more prosperous future for generations to come.
“Forests are not merely landscapes of trees; they are living shields against climate change, reservoirs of biodiversity, and lifelines for communities. The success of BTASP demonstrates how visionary partnerships can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.”
