Abbottabad admin declares war on forest fires, DC orders rapid response, zero tolerance policy

ABBOTTABAD, Jun 03 (APP): Deputy Commissioner Abbottabad Sarmad Saleem has said that forests were a national lifeline and warned that negligence leading to forest fires would not be tolerated.

Chairing a high-level meeting on forest fire prevention, preparedness, and emergency response here Wednesday, the DC stressed that protecting forests was a collective responsibility and directed all concerned departments to adopt strict preventive measures and ensure rapid response readiness in view of rising wildfire risks across the district.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Forest Department, Wildlife Department, Rescue 1122, Police, Health Department, Tehsil Administration, TMAs, Galiyat Development Authority, Civil Defence and other relevant institutions.

The Deputy Commissioner ordered enhanced surveillance of reserved forests, Guzara forests, and private forest areas, directing authorities to ensure effective monitoring and timely preventive action. He also emphasized the establishment and maintenance of fire lines to prevent the spread of fires in vulnerable areas.

It was decided in the meeting that district and tehsil-level committees would be formed to strengthen coordination, while Rapid Response Teams would remain alert and active in their respective jurisdictions to deal with any emergency situation without delay.

Sarmad Saleem further directed that firefighting vehicles and equipment must remain fully functional at all times, while potential water sources should be identified in advance to ensure quick response capability. He also called for joint emergency drills to improve institutional coordination and operational readiness.

Taking a strict stance, he said that legal action would be taken against individuals responsible for causing forest fires or engaging in negligent behavior. He reminded participants that Section 144 is already in place in Abbottabad, banning campfires, burning of dry vegetation, and the disposal of lit cigarettes or flammable materials in forest areas.

He also emphasized on launching a comprehensive awareness campaign through social, print and electronic media to educate the public about forest protection and fire prevention.

Reiterating the importance of forests, DC Abbottabad Sarmad Saleem said they are vital for environmental balance, wildlife survival, and human well-being, urging citizens to immediately report any fire incident or suspicious activity to the District Control Room at 0992-9310553 so timely action can prevent major damage.
