ISLAMABAD, May 28 (APP):Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice President of the Pakistan Peoples Party, on Thursday extended warm congratulations to the people of Pakistan on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer, describing it as a milestone of national resolve and responsible deterrence marking the anniversary of Pakistan’s 1998 nuclear tests.
In her message, Senator Rehman stated:“Youm-e-Takbeer is a significant milestone in Pakistan’s history. It reflects our national resolve to safeguard sovereignty and maintain strategic stability in a region marked by complex security challenges. This day is a reminder of the decisions taken in the interest of peace, deterrence, and self-reliance.”
She underscored the foundational role played by Pakistan’s leadership in establishing a credible national security framework:
“The foundations of Pakistan’s nuclear programme were laid by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto under immense international pressure. That legacy was strengthened by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto through the development of Pakistan’s missile programme, steps that shaped the country’s strategic posture and long-term security planning.”
Senator Rehman noted that Pakistan’s nuclear capability is grounded in a doctrine of restraint and responsibility.
“Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state. Our capability is not aimed at aggression but at preserving peace through credible deterrence. In a region with recurring tensions, deterrence has played a key role in preventing escalation and maintaining stability.”
Referring to recent unprovoked attacks by India, she added:“Pakistan has demonstrated that it remains fully capable of protecting its territorial integrity and responding with maturity and clarity when needed. Our commitment to peace remains steadfast, but so does our ability to defend ourselves if compelled.”
Senator Rehman concluded by emphasizing the need to continue strengthening Pakistan’s institutions, strategic communication, and global engagement.
“Youm-e-Takbeer is not only about past achievements, it is about the future of national resilience. We must ensure that our strategic decisions continue to be guided by wisdom, restraint, and long-term thinking. Today is a day to honour that commitment and reaffirm our pursuit of peace with strength and responsibility.”
