ISLAMABAD, Apr 08 (APP):Western countries including Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark and Spain, along with the European Council and European Commission, on Wednesday welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreed between the United States and Iran.
In a joint statement, the leaders including Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, Mark Carney, Mette Frederiksen, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Pedro Sánchez, Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa also thanked Pakistan and all the partners involved for mediating this important agreement.
Sharing the development on his X account, the Foreign Office spokesperson highlighted the joint statement and noted that the leaders had welcomed the ceasefire and acknowledged Pakistan’s facilitation role in achieving the understanding between Washington and Tehran.
The joint statement emphasized that the goal should now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the conflict through diplomatic means within the coming days, stressing that progress toward a substantive negotiated settlement would be crucial to protect civilians in Iran and ensure stability in the wider region.
It further underlined that a diplomatic resolution could help avert a severe global energy crisis and called upon all sides to fully implement the ceasefire, including in Lebanon.
The leaders also reaffirmed their governments’ commitment to contributing to efforts aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, describing maritime security as essential for regional and global stability.
