Lawmakers highlight Pakistan’s diplomatic role, economic challenges

ISLAMABAD, Apr 07 (APP): Lawmakers in the National Assembly on Tuesday discussed Pakistan’s growing diplomatic importance, proactive governance, and steps toward long-term economic stability, while reviewing regional developments and domestic relief measures.
Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, MQM leader Muhammad Jawed Hanif Khan highlighted Pakistan’s strategic location amid changing dynamics in Iran, the Gulf, and Afghanistan.
He praised the government’s balanced foreign policy and stressed the need for proactive planning.
Hanif said Pakistan’s responsible role internationally offers opportunities to strengthen its regional and global standing.
PPP’s Sharmila Faruqui applauded the government’s swift response to rising global fuel prices, including significant reductions in fuel costs.
She called for a clear long-term policy framework to ensure stability and confidence, emphasizing that structured planning, fiscal discipline, and coordinated engagement can help manage energy costs and support economic stability.
MNA Pullain Baloch highlighted opportunities for economic growth through increased trade with Iran, especially in border regions.
He praised government briefings on regional developments and suggested restoring traditional border trade mechanisms like the “Raahdari” system with Iran to support local markets.
Sehar Kamran focused on the need for comprehensive economic reforms and targeted support for the middle class.
She recommended expanding the tax base, stabilizing agricultural costs, and investing in education and fuel-efficient transport, noting that consistent long-term policies would promote inclusive growth.
PML-N leader Sheikh Aftab Ahmed emphasized Pakistan’s active role in promoting peace amid global tensions.
He highlighted government and military initiatives to provide relief to vulnerable citizens, including daily wage workers, despite rising fuel, electricity, and gas prices.
Ahmed called for constructive debate and practical solutions, stressing that criticism should be paired with viable alternatives.
PPP lawmaker Samina Khalid Ghurki praised Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with neighbors, particularly Iran and the U.S., and highlighted the nation’s standing as a responsible nuclear power.
She expressed concern over rising food and fuel prices and called for proactive measures to stabilize agricultural supplies and ensure citizens’ welfare.
Ghurki also encouraged the expansion of small-scale energy projects, such as solar and tube wells, to empower local communities.
JUI member Noor Alam Khan called for a review of recent hikes in petroleum products in order to ensure relief for people in this difficult time.
PPPP Mirza Ikhtiar Baig called for a revision of oil prices to ensure prompt relief for people and industries.
He also called for future price adjustments that consider affordability and citizen welfare.
