Plantation campaigns must be critically analyzed to assess real environmental impact: FCCI president

FAISALABAD, Apr 04 (APP):President Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FCCI) Farooq Yousaf Sheikh said that successive tree plantation campaigns during the last many decades must be critically analyzed to assess real environmental impact and suggest result-oriented measures by involving the private sector.
Addressing the officials of different trade bodies during a meeting, he underlined the importance of environmental threats which have deep-rooted impacts on the fragile economy of Pakistan.
He said that we must educate and sensitize masses to understand the importance of the environment and contribute our role to save it for the coming generations.
“Eco-friendly socio-economic society must be developed so that people at large would play their role in preferring the environment by saving trees planted by the public as well as private sector”, he said and added that people have an inherent mental and practical approach to save trees.
He expressed concern over fast increasing population and urbanization and said that most of the ecological issues are directly linked with economic interests of the public and poor performance of the public sector including Forest Department and Parks & Horticulture Authorities across the country.
“We must utilize relevant and available data and exploit Artificial Intelligence for comprehensive analysis of strengths and weaknesses of the tree plantation campaigns”, he said and added that on its basis we could suggest appropriate and result oriented measures to introduce a clear shift in selection of trees.
President FCCI said that we should maintain a balance between trees to yield timber only and fruit bearing plants which could also be utilized by humans as well as birds and animals.
He said that the University of Agriculture Faisalabad must play a lead role in promoting forest cover by identifying suitable plant species.
He assured that the business community would play its role in saving earth as it is the only living planet in this universe.
