RAWALPINDI, Mar 30 (APP): Rain lashed the twin cities for several hours from late Sunday night before subsiding on Monday, with the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) remaining on high alert and staff staying on their toes to drain water from low-lying areas.

According to WASA Rawalpindi Managing Director Aziz Ullah Khan, field teams along with heavy machinery had been deployed in vulnerable localities to tackle any emergency arising from the rainfall. He said prompt action by WASA staff ensured that rainwater did not accumulate for long in key areas.

He said dewatering operations were carried out in low-lying localities including Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk underpass, Murree Road and parts of Sadiqabad, where teams worked continuously during the rain spell.

The managing director said Nullah Leh was monitored round the clock and the water flow remained within normal limits throughout the rainfall.

He said rainfall recorded at various locations included 18 mm at Saidpur, 15 mm at Golra, 16 mm at PMD, 15 mm at Pirwadhai, 13 mm at Chaklala and 14 mm at Katarian.

A WASA spokesman said field officers personally supervised drainage operations on the directions of the managing director to ensure timely clearance of rainwater.

He urged citizens to avoid disposing of waste into drains and to refrain from removing manhole covers, warning that such practices could aggravate urban flooding.
The spokesman also advised the public to contact the WASA helpline in case of any emergency.
