PESHAWAR, Mar 16 (APP):The tenure of local governments formed in the first phase of the local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has come to an end, leading to the formal dissolution of the local government system in several districts across the province.
Officials said that the four-year term of elected representatives, including those of Metropolitan Corporation Peshawar and various district and tehsil councils, has expired. Prior to the completion of the tenure, authorities had directed local representatives to return official vehicles and other government assets.
Sources in the administration said arrangements were also being made to conduct an audit of funds utilized by local governments during their tenure.
Following the dissolution of the system, administrative powers related to municipal affairs have temporarily been assigned to deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners in the respective districts.
Officials indicated that the schedule for the next local government elections has yet to be announced and may face delays due to the prevailing security situation in parts of the province.
