RAWALPINDI, Mar 10 (APP):Commissioner Rawalpindi Aamir Khattak on Tuesday chaired a meeting to review administrative and security arrangements for the gatherings and processions being held to mark the martyrdom day of Hazrat Ali (AS) (Youm-e-Ali), directing authorities to further tighten the security in view of the prevailing situation.
The commissioner said that given the current regional scenario, security measures needed to be strengthened to ensure the peaceful observance of the occasion. He noted that tensions along the Afghan and Iran borders and the alleged patronage of hostile elements by neighbouring India could prompt adversarial forces to attempt to incite sectarian unrest and disorder in the country.
However, he said, the divisional administration, police and the public would work together to thwart any such designs. “We must maintain law and order at all costs so that no miscreant can exploit the situation to create unrest,” he added.
Officials briefed the meeting that responsibilities had been assigned to all relevant departments for the observance of the martyrdom day of Hazrat Ali (AS). They said the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), municipal committees, Sui Gas authorities, the power utility and other departments had completed their respective arrangements and submitted compliance certificates.
Aamir Khattak directed the health and food departments to ensure their teams inspected food items during Sehr and Iftar at processions and religious gatherings (Majalis) so that the public could be provided safe and hygienic food.
He also instructed all relevant departments to inspect procession routes under the supervision of assistant commissioners and ensure the provision of cleanliness, lighting, water, gas and other basic facilities.
The commissioner further directed that control rooms at district and tehsil levels remain fully functional and their contact numbers be shared with organisers of processions and gatherings to enable immediate coordination in case of any emergency.
The meeting, held at the Commissioner Office, was attended by Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Hassan Waqar Cheema, police officers and officials of the departments concerned.
