LAHORE, Mar 09 (APP):The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that hazardous air pollution triggered by recent US and Israeli strikes on oil facilities in Iran could drift toward the western regions of Pakistan due to prevailing wind patterns, potentially deteriorating air quality in several parts of the country.
According to a statement issued by the department, the ongoing situation in Iran may allow polluted particles and smoke to travel through atmospheric currents toward western Pakistan, which could further aggravate pollution levels in those areas.
The MET Office also said that a westerly weather system is expected to enter the upper regions of the country on Monday evening and may persist until March 12. Under the influence of this system, rain and thunderstorms are likely in several areas.
Meanwhile, partly cloudy but dry weather prevailed in the city on Monday, and similar conditions are expected to continue over the next 24 hours. Meteorological officials stated that the westerly wave is currently affecting the western parts of the country and is likely to remain active until March 12.
They forecast cloudy weather with rain, wind and thunderstorms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and the Potohar region. Isolated hailstorms are also possible during this period. In contrast, most other parts of the country are expected to experience mainly dry weather.
On Monday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded in Mithi, where the mercury soared to 40°C, while Lahore recorded a maximum temperature of 31°C.
