IGP pays tribute to Liberty Chowk martyrs on 17th anniversary

LAHORE, Mar 03 (APP):Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Abdul Kareem on Tuesday paid tribute to six police officers and personnel who embraced martyrdom while foiling the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team at Liberty Chowk in 2009, on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the incident.
In his message, the IGP said that the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty were a source of pride for the entire police force and the nation. He added that Punjab Police had played a pivotal role in the revival of international cricket, as well as sports and cultural activities in the country.
According to the Punjab Police spokesperson, on March 3, 2009, police officers and personnel thwarted the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team and laid down their lives while protecting the visiting players.
The martyrs included Traffic Warden Tanveer Iqbal, Head Constable Faisal Rasheed, and Constables Mudassar Nadeem, Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Sultan and Tipu Fareed.
Abdul Kareem said that the sacrifices of the martyred officers would always be remembered and honored. He reaffirmed that Punjab Police would continue to extend full support and welfare to the families of the martyrs without interruption.
