ISLAMABAD, Feb 26 (APP):Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights during the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, said in a Press release issued here on Thursday.
Addressing the Council, Federal Secretary for Human Rights, Abdul Khaliq Sheikh, emphasized that human rights must be upheld in both favorable and challenging circumstances. He underscored the need for the international community to move beyond rhetoric and ensure the practical and effective protection of human rights worldwide.
The Federal Secretary expressed Pakistan’s deep concern over the human rights situations in Afghanistan, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Palestine. He highlighted that the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir continue to be deprived of their inalienable right to self-determination, as enshrined in relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
He further voiced concern over the ongoing violence, humanitarian crisis, and lack of accountability in Palestine, stressing the urgent need for international action to ensure justice and lasting peace.
Reiterating Pakistan’s principled position, Sheikh stated that Islam cannot be misused to justify the exploitation or denial of women’s rights. He emphasized that women’s rights are human rights and must be protected and promoted without discrimination.
The statement also called for concerted global efforts to counter the rising tide of Islamophobia and religious intolerance, urging states to foster mutual respect, dialogue, and understanding among diverse communities.
Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and the strengthening of the international human rights framework to ensure dignity, equality, and justice for all.
