ISLAMABAD, Feb 25 (APP):Director General of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), Major General Abdul Sami, called on Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi along with his team to discuss ongoing and proposed development initiatives in Pakistan Railways.
During the meeting, on Wednesday, the minister was given a detailed briefing on projects being executed with the cooperation of FWO, particularly those related to the modernization and digitalization of the railway system.
Officials said the first phase of railway digitalization would comprise 13 major projects aimed at upgrading the system on modern lines. Plans are underway to introduce a railway tracking system and GPS-based monitoring to ensure more effective oversight of train operations.
The meeting also discussed the provision of Wi-Fi facilities at major railway stations and the establishment of locomotive check points to improve operational efficiency and passenger services.
Participants considered expanding the scope of Safe and Smart Railway Stations, modelled on the Rawalpindi station initiative, to other cities. The establishment of a central control room in Lahore and control rooms in all HR divisions was also discussed in principle.
The setting up of a modern data centre is expected to significantly enhance the performance and management of railway operations, officials said.
The progress on the ML-3 project was reviewed, while detailed discussions were also held on strengthening the railway network through the Thar coal project and promoting efficient energy utilisation.
