NEW YORK, Feb 23 (APP): Envoys of Turkiye and Pakistan to the UN Sunday joined members of the Turkish and Pakistani communities at Masjid un Noor to commemorate the third anniversary of the devastating 6 February 2023 earthquake that hit Turkiye’s south-central region.
The powerful earthquake, which struck near the country’s border with Syria, claimed over 62,000 lives (53,537 in Turkiye and 8,476 in Syria) and injured more than 100,000.
The solemn ceremony, held over Iftar, “reflected the longstanding, historic, and brotherly ties between the peoples of the two countries, underscoring the deep bonds of friendship and solidarity that define the Pakistan–Turkiye strategic partnership,” a press release of the Pakistani Mission to the UN said.
In brief remarks, Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz of Turkiye and his Pakistani counterpart Asim Iftikhar Ahmad expressed their appreciation to the Board of Directors of Masjid un Noor for organizing the commemorative event.
Both ambassadors highlighted the multifaceted and enduring relationship between Pakistan and Turkiye, marked by steadfast support for each other’s core interests, close cooperation at the United Nations, and joint advocacy for the just causes of the peoples of Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
They also lauded the accomplishments of Pakistani and Turkish communities in diverse fields, and for their vital role in further strengthening the fraternal relations between the two countries.
