Balochistan govt formulating long-term climate strategy, establishes climate fund to combat environmental risks: Bugti

QUETTA, Feb 20 (APP): The Balochistan government is formulating a sustainable and comprehensive strategy to tackle the adverse impacts of climate change in the province, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti announced during a high-level meeting on Friday.
The meeting was held with Romina Khurshid Alam, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, and focused on the province’s growing environmental risks and the need for a coordinated response. Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation between federal and provincial governments, enhance resource allocation, and expand technical assistance to address Balochistan’s pressing climate concerns.
Sarfraz Bugti described climate change as one of the most serious challenges of the present era, noting that its effects are being felt with greater intensity in Balochistan. He highlighted the establishment of the province’s first Climate Fund, designed to ensure timely completion of environmental projects and practical interventions in areas most affected by floods, droughts, and other disasters.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the provincial government is actively working on a durable policy framework aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and ensuring long-term resilience. He stressed that while Balochistan’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is negligible, the province remains among the regions most severely impacted, underscoring the need for stronger inter-provincial coordination and robust federal support.
Romina Khurshid Alam reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to working closely with Balochistan on climate initiatives. She lauded the provincial government’s efforts under Bugti’s leadership, particularly the inclusion of women and marginalized communities in climate policy-making, calling it a forward-looking and inclusive step.
The meeting concluded with a renewed pledge from both sides to continue joint efforts aimed at making Balochistan an environmentally secure and sustainable province.
