Senate urged to avoid politicising prisoner health, rely on medical reports

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13 (APP): The Senate on Friday witnessed a discussion on the health of the PTI founder, with Senator Pervez Rashid urging lawmakers and the public to avoid politicising medical issues and instead rely on verified medical assessments.
Speaking on the floor of the House, Pervez Rashid said every sick individual, including prisoners, deserved sympathy and proper medical care, stressing that access to treatment was a fundamental right that should not be influenced by political considerations.
He added that no civilised society could justify denying healthcare facilities to any detainee.
However, the senator cautioned against what he described as exaggerated narratives surrounding the PTI founder’s health.
He argued that reports submitted by court-appointed representatives had already clarified the factual position regarding the prisoner’s medical condition.
Pervez Rashid also referred to earlier social media speculation suggesting — “God forbid” — that the PTI founder had passed away, noting that such claims later proved unfounded.
He said recent discussions about eyesight issues appeared to follow a similar pattern of unverified speculation, which he termed inappropriate and irresponsible.
He emphasised that discussions on health matters should be guided by professional medical evaluations rather than political rhetoric, warning that politicising illness risked undermining the seriousness of parliamentary debate as well as public trust.
The senator concluded by stating that medical care was being provided in accordance with legal and judicial requirements, reiterating the need for restraint and factual accuracy when addressing sensitive health-related issues in political discourse.
