CJP discusses Judicial system reforms with UN officials

ISLAMABAD, Feb 09 (APP): “A strong and credible justice system is a foundational pillar for sustainable development and democratic governance,” Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi said during a meeting with United Nations representatives on Monday.
The Chief Justice held a meeting with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya and a delegation comprising country representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Women, UNICEF, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and UNFPA to discuss reform priorities in Pakistan’s judicial sector.
During the meeting, the Chief Justice shared perspectives on ongoing reform initiatives aimed at improving access to justice, enhancing institutional efficiency, and ensuring a justice system that is inclusive, responsive, and citizen-centric.
He emphasized the close linkage between justice sector reforms and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those relating to access to justice and the development of effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions.
Justice Afridi appreciated the constructive role played by UN agencies in Pakistan in supporting governance reforms, rule-of-law initiatives, human rights protection, gender equality, child-sensitive justice, and institutional capacity building, noting that these efforts complement national reform measures.
Both sides also explored avenues for future collaboration, including technical assistance, judicial education and training, policy support, data-driven reform initiatives, and the sharing of international best practices. They underscored the importance of sustained engagement and partnership to address emerging challenges and promote innovation and resilience within the justice system.
The meeting reflected a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation for advancing justice sector reforms in line with Pakistan’s constitutional values and international development commitments.
