PESHAWAR, Feb 09 (APP): WAPDA delivered a stellar performance at the 62nd national badminton championship here, securing four gold, four silver, and six bronze medals, asserting their dominance across both team and individual events.
The eight-day championship, organized by the Pakistan Badminton Federation, was held at the Pakistan Sports Board, Peshawar.
The closing ceremony was attended by DG Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tashfee Haider, President Pakistan Badminton Federation Wajid Ali, General Secretary Raja Azhar, and other officials.
A total of eleven teams participated, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, AJK, Islamabad, Pakistan Army, Pakistan Railways, SNGPL, WAPDA, Higher Education Commission, and Police.
In the Men’s Team Event, WAPDA clinched gold after defeating Pakistan Army 3-1 in a compelling final, demonstrating exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination.
The WAPDA Women’s Team also performed strongly, advancing to the final and securing the runners-up position.
WAPDA players excelled in individual events as well. In Women’s Singles, Mahoor Shahzad claimed gold and Ghazala Siddiqui took silver, while Zubaira Islam paired with Umama from SNGPL to win gold in Women’s Doubles.
Ghazala Siddiqui, paired with Palwasha from the Army team, secured silver in the same category.
In Men’s Singles, Larosh Ali earned bronze, and in Men’s Doubles, Larosh Ali and Muhammad Adnan finished second. In Mixed Doubles, Larosh Ali and Zubaira Islam took gold, while Muhammad Adnan paired with Warda to claim bronze.
Key players including Ali Larosh, Zubaira Islam, Ghazala Siddiqui, and Qari Muhammad Adnan were instrumental in WAPDA’s overall success.
In the team events, WAPDA’s men’s team captured gold, with Pakistan Army taking silver and SNGPL and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sharing bronze.
In the women’s team event, Army secured gold, WAPDA finished second, and SNGPL and Punjab shared bronze.
The championship highlighted WAPDA’s comprehensive strength across genders and categories, underscoring their position as a leading force in Pakistan’s national badminton circuit.
The event concluded with praise for the sportsmanship and competitive spirit of all participating teams, emphasizing the role of national-level tournaments in promoting badminton talent across the country.
