Pakistan strengthens child nutrition and social protection through WFP collaboration

ISLAMABAD, Feb 06 (APP): Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, Syed Imran Ahmad Shah held an important high-level meeting with World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director, Ms. Coco Ushiyama on Friday to strengthen collaboration on child nutrition, education, and social protection through a coordinated and integrated national framework.
During the meeting, both sides discussed linking the Benazir Income Support Programme’s (BISP) Nashonuma initiative with Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal’s (PBM) Child Labour Schools and Women Centres, aiming to provide comprehensive, targeted support for vulnerable children and women.
The Federal Minister emphasized that assistance should reach deserving families in a unified, effective manner, ensuring maximum impact and avoiding duplication of efforts.
Syed Imran Ahmad Shah underlined the need to harmonize national programmes with global objectives to eradicate hunger and poverty, stating that such alignment is essential to achieving sustainable social and economic development.
 Highlighting the School Meals Programme, he described it as a crucial initiative to improve children’s health, nutrition, and school attendance, particularly in marginalized communities.
WFP Country Director Ms. Coco Ushiyama stressed the importance of close collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to respond effectively to floods and other climate-related risks that continue to threaten food security and livelihoods in Pakistan.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening partnership and strengthening integrated social protection systems, ensuring that interventions reach the most vulnerable segments of society in a timely, efficient, and impactful manner.
