LAHORE, Feb 05 (APP): Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Rao Abdul Kareem visited the Walled City areas including Mochi Gate on Thursday to review security arrangements for the three-day Basant festival in Lahore.
Accompanied by DIG Operations Lahore Muhammad Faisal Kamran and other senior police officers, the IGP was briefed on the security measures by DIG Faisal Kamran. Rao Abdul Kareem directed Lahore Police to ensure full compliance with government-issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the Punjab Kite Flying Act to guarantee a safe and peaceful festival.
The IGP said that over 10,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed in Lahore for Basant, including additional traffic staff to manage the large influx of visitors from other cities. Lahore has been divided into three security zones to ensure smooth law and order management during the festival.
He warned that any violation of government restrictions, including the use of metallic or chemical strings, drones, or other prohibited items, will be dealt with strictly. Surveillance has been strengthened using CCTV cameras and drones to monitor the city.
Rao Abdul Kareem stated that 1,600 cases have already been registered against violations of the Kite Flying Act, and additional measures have been taken to maintain strict law enforcement throughout the festival. He urged citizens to follow SOPs, emphasising that failure to comply would leave no room for leniency.
The IGP further said that under the guidance of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, public awareness campaigns have been conducted to inform citizens about Basant SOPs, and the cooperation of residents is crucial to ensure a safe and orderly celebration.
