LAHORE, Feb 03 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) lodged an FIR against a famous barbecue restaurant in Ferozewala and discarded 5,500 kilograms of poultry and meat along with 1,140 litres of substandard milk during a province-wide crackdown on food adulteration.
According to a PFA spokesperson, enforcement teams, acting on the directions of Director General Asim Javaid, carried out extensive inspections during which prohibited China salt and other unsafe items were recovered and destroyed. The restaurant was sealed after the use of banned China salt was confirmed.
The spokesperson said that food safety teams conducted raids on 255 milk-carrying vehicles and 71 meat shops, imposing fines worth Rs99,000 for violations. During the operation, over 194,000 litres of milk and 98,000 kilograms of meat were checked, while adulterated milk was discarded after failing on-the-spot quality tests.
Director General Asim Javaid said that the actions were carried out through blockades set up early in the morning and late at night to effectively curb adulteration. He added that senior veterinary specialists conducted detailed examinations of poultry declared unfit for human consumption.
The DG said the discarded birds were found to be suffering from flu, underweight conditions and other diseases. He added that fines were imposed following the recovery of sick and underweight poultry, which was subsequently destroyed.
He further said that medical and training certificates of workers were found missing at several milk shops, stressing that strict monitoring was being ensured at all stages, from food preparation to delivery.
Asim Javaid urged food handlers to use aprons, head covers, masks and gloves during work, adding that efforts were underway to modernize milk and meat preparation and supply systems in line with international standards. He said all available resources were being utilized to eliminate the adulteration mafia, while PFA teams inspect food businesses in three shifts daily.
