Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, UK high commissioner discuss bilateral and parliamentary ties

ISLAMABAD, Feb 03 (APP):National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Tuesday met British High Commissioner Jane Marriott at the Parliament House, where the two sides discussed bilateral relations as well as key parliamentary and regional issues.
During the meeting, the speaker said Pakistan attached great importance to its historic and friendly relations with the United Kingdom.
He underscored the importance of strengthening parliamentary and people-to-people contacts between the two countries, saying closer engagement would help promote greater harmony between the two nations.
Ayaz Sadiq said the opposition was an integral component of the National Assembly and that he maintained cordial relations with all opposition members.
He noted that all standing committees of the National Assembly were fully functional and appreciated the United Kingdom’s support in strengthening Pakistan’s parliamentary committee system.
Highlighting security challenges, the speaker said Pakistan had suffered from terrorism for decades and remained determined to effectively counter it.
He also described climate change as a global challenge and welcomed British cooperation in helping Pakistan address climate-related risks.
Ayaz Sadiq said specialised parliamentary bodies, including the Parliamentary Committee on Gender Mainstreaming and the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, were playing an active role in promoting women’s rights and welfare.
He added that a Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights had also been established to safeguard and advance the rights and wellbeing of children.
Marriott appreciated the speaker’s inclusive approach of working with all members of the National Assembly without discrimination and reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s interest in continued cooperation with Pakistan at both parliamentary and public levels.
