UNITED NATIONS, Feb 3 (APP):Chile’s former President, Michelle Bachelet, has been formally registered as a candidate to head the United Nations, a spokesperson of the president of the UN General Assembly, La Neice Collins, has announced.
So far, only the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Argentina nation, Rafael Grossi, has officially announced his candidacy to succeed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will complete his second five-year term at the end of this year.
The former Vice President of Costa Rica, Rebeca Grynspan, has also expressed interest.
The office traditionally rotates between the world regions, with Latin America next in line. To date, the United Nations has never been led by a woman.
The post will be filled on January 1, 2027.
Ms. Bachelet was president of Chile from 2006-10 and from 2014-18. She was then appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Despite the challenges posed by the challenging geopolitical environment, Ms. Bachelet said she remains committed to strengthening the instruments of multilateralism and modernizing the UN.
In her first speech as a candidate for secretary-general, she hailed the organization, which has 193 members, as “the world’s most important forum for meeting, dialogue and the search for common solutions.”
