ISLAMABAD, Feb 02 (APP):Lawmakers in the Upper House of Parliament on Monday stressed the need for a comprehensive political approach to address the law and order situation in Balochistan.
They were of the view that a new National Action Plan (NAP) should be devised to bring peace and tranquility to the province.
Speaking in the Senate, former caretaker prime minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said that mere reliance on force alone would not bring lasting peace to the province.
He stressed the need for political dialogue, development, representation and confidence-building measures to ensure durable peace in Balochistan.
Taking part in the debate, Jan Muhammad Buledi said that the unrest in Balochistan did not emerge overnight.
He said civilians, security personnel and ordinary citizens had suffered for years, adding that the issue was deeply rooted in unresolved political grievances.
Senator Kamran Murtaza said that terrorism must be condemned in all its forms and pointed out the efficacy of counterterrorism strategies.
Senator Nasir Mehmood rejected any notion of dialogue with terrorists, saying there should be zero tolerance for those involved in the killing of innocent civilians, women and children.
He said talks could only be held with individuals who renounced violence and surrendered their arms, adding that terrorism must be confronted with national unity.
Senator Jam Saifullah stressed the need for political ownership of the issue, saying that without restoring trust between the state and the people of Balochistan, security measures alone would face challenges.
