BAHAWALPUR, Jan 30 (APP): Deputy Commissioner Bahawalpur Syed Hassan Raza chaired an emergency meeting to review the installation of manhole covers and to ensure the safety of citizens.
Officers from the Municipal Corporation, District Council, Sui Southern Gas Company, PTCL, and WASA attended the meeting. Addressing the participants, the Deputy Commissioner stated that, in line with the clear directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the protection of precious human lives is the government’s top priority and that no negligence in this regard will be tolerated. He emphasized that the Chief Minister’s instructions must be implemented in letter and spirit and that all concerned departments must work in close coordination under a unified strategy.
The Deputy Commissioner directed that areas where manhole covers are missing or damaged should be identified immediately, and repairs and installation should be carried out without delay to prevent any untoward incidents. He also instructed that field monitoring be made more stringent to ensure compliance. During the meeting, a detailed review was conducted of open pits and uncovered manholes left during ongoing construction and development projects across the city.
The Deputy Commissioner strictly instructed all relevant departments to install manhole covers immediately in accordance with prescribed SOPs and to ensure that no manholes remain open under any circumstances. He further stressed that public safety must be given top priority during all construction activities, with all necessary safety measures ensured at all times to avert potential accidents. The Deputy Commissioner warned that strict action would be taken against officers and officials found guilty of negligence or carelessness.
