ISLAMABAD, Jan 29 (APP):PIYAAS Human Rights Organization has welcomed the enactment of the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2026, signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari.
The organisation termed the legislation a major step toward safeguarding women’s rights in Pakistan.
PIYAAS described the law as a milestone for human rights, noting that it criminalizes threats of a second marriage or divorce without a wife’s consent, as well as specified forms of psychological, emotional and financial abuse.
The organisation said it was “thrilled and deeply heartened” by the signing, calling the measure a monumental victory for women’s rights and a commitment to addressing domestic violence and coercive practices within families.
“We commend the Pakistani government, Parliament, and President Asif Ali Zardari for taking this crucial step in protecting human rights, particularly women’s rights, through this long-awaited and necessary law,” PIYAAS stated.
The PIYAAS stressed that the law must be followed by strict enforcement, urging the government to establish effective mechanisms, raise public awareness, train law enforcement and the judiciary, and ensure women have accessible channels to report violations
PIYAAS added that the effort requires collective involvement of government authorities, civil society and women’s rights advocates.
Reiterating its commitment, PIYAAS said it will closely monitor enforcement and continue to advocate for effective implementation to ensure the law delivers protection and justice for women, and helps make communities safer and more equitable.
