Pakistan, Sri Lanka agree to deepen economic cooperation at 13th JEC session

ISLAMABAD, Jan 28 (APP):Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen bilateral economic relations and expand cooperation across multiple sectors during the 13th Session of the Pakistan–Sri Lanka Joint Economic Commission (JEC).
The Pakistani delegation was led by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Haroon Akhtar Khan, said a news release.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening Pakistan–Sri Lanka ties and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors of mutual interest.
The 13th Session of the ePakistan–Sri Lanka Joint Economic Commission (JEC) was held in Colombo.
A key outcome of the session was the decision to establish a Joint Working Group on IT and Digital Economy, reflecting both countries’ resolve to collaborate in emerging technologies and digital transformation.
The two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in advanced and innovative technological fields.
Discussions were held on expanding industrial collaboration and increasing bilateral trade, with Sri Lanka inviting Pakistani pharmaceutical companies to explore investment opportunities.
Both countries expressed consensus on strengthening cooperation in the SME sector, recognizing its vital role in economic growth and employment generation.
Significant progress was made in the agriculture and livestock sectors, including discussions on meat and seed trade. Advancements were also reported in finalizing procedures for the export of Sri Lankan pineapple and avocado to Pakistan.
In the field of education, both sides agreed to promote Pakistan as a destination for higher education opportunities for Sri Lankan students. The meeting also underscored the importance of joint research in science and technology, as well as cooperation in cutting-edge sectors.
Health sector collaboration featured prominently, with agreement to enhance joint research, pharmaceutical cooperation, and regulatory coordination.
Maritime cooperation was also discussed, including potential partnerships through Karachi and Gwadar ports. Pakistan offered support to Sri Lanka in shipbuilding and maritime training, further broadening the scope of bilateral engagement.
The two sides reviewed progress under the Pakistan–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and agreed on practical steps to increase bilateral trade volumes.
The successful convening of the 13th JEC session reflects the shared commitment of Pakistan and Sri Lanka to elevate their economic partnership and translate mutual goodwill into tangible economic outcomes.
