ISLAMABAD, Jan 21 (APP):The National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2025, bringing key changes to the Elections Act, 2017, aimed at balancing transparency with the protection of individual rights.
Introduced by Ms Shazia Marri, the legislation introduces changes to the Elections Act, 2017, aiming to balance transparency with the privacy rights of parliamentarians.
Lawmakers observed that while publishing parliamentarians’ statements of assets and liabilities is essential for public accountability, good governance, and building trust in public office, excessive disclosure could risk compromising the personal security and privacy of legislators and their families.
A major provision aligns statutory references with the Federal Constitutional Court, replacing the term “Supreme” with “Federal Constitutional” in relevant sections. Amendments were made to sections 9, 66, 138 of the Act.
The passage reflects the Assembly’s effort to safeguard privacy while maintaining accountability and consistency with constitutional frameworks.
