ISLAMABAD, Jan 20 (APP):Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Raja Nasir Abbas, on Tuesday said the Upper House of Parliament must function as a forum to address public grievances and legislate for the benefit of the poor, labourers, farmers, the unemployed, and other marginalised segments of society.
In his maiden address to the Senate after being formally declared Opposition Leader, he thanked the Chairman and opposition members for their support, saying that Pakistan was the motherland whose national interest, security, and well-being must be safeguarded at all costs. He vowed to play his role in steering the country out of its ongoing crises.
Describing the Constitution as a sacred social contract born out of the collective aspirations of the people—particularly following the adoption of the 1973 Constitution—he said it clearly defined the separation of powers among state institutions and prohibited encroachment into each other’s domains.
He said that societies, families, and states could not function without rules, warning that disregard for the law reflected a dangerous erosion of respect for the legal order that held society together.
