ISLAMABAD, Jan 13 (APP):The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration on Tuesday detained 13 people during an operation against street begging in the federal capital, officials said.
The action was carried out in Sector F-6 and at Express Chowk, where those taken into custody were shifted to a police lock-up.
The Islamabad district administration has stepped up efforts to curb street begging as part of its ongoing campaign to maintain order in public spaces.
Assistant Commissioner City, Maheen Hassan, led the operation, targeting areas where complaints about professional beggars had been reported by residents and shopkeepers.
Officials said the operation focused on Sector F-6 and Express Chowk, two locations that see heavy movement of pedestrians and vehicles throughout the day.
During the action, 13 individuals identified as professional beggars were detained. They were later transferred to the lock-up for further legal action under the relevant laws.
According to the administration, the presence of organized begging groups has remained a concern in several parts of the city. Authorities said such activities often disrupt traffic flow, affect public movement, and create problems for citizens who use these areas daily. The latest operation is part of a broader plan to discourage begging and address related issues through regular monitoring.
The district administration has also appealed to citizens to play their role in making Islamabad free of street begging. Officials urged residents to avoid giving money to people involved in begging and instead report such cases to the concerned authorities. They said public cooperation is necessary to identify individuals who repeatedly engage in this practice.
Authorities believe that discouraging begging requires both administrative action and public awareness. By refusing to encourage the practice and by informing officials about its presence, citizens can support efforts to address the issue more effectively.
The administration further stated that operations against professional beggars will remain ongoing and may be expanded to other busy points across the capital. Officials said their focus remains on ensuring smooth movement in public areas and responding to complaints received from the public.
Residents have been advised to contact the district administration or local officials if they notice organized begging activities in their neighborhoods.
