HYDERABAD, Jan 03 (APP):The 6th International Dental Conference, a two-day event, was inaugurated on Saturday at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, under the theme ‘Transforming Oral Health — Where Technology Meets Tradition’.
Addressing a large gathering of around 1,000 national and foreign delegates, Vice Chancellor LUMHS Prof Dr Ikram Din Ujjan highlighted that oral health is a vital yet often neglected component of public health in Pakistan, particularly in underserved and rural areas.
Pakistan, he noted, faced an increasing burden of oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disorders, and oral cancers, which required affordable, context-specific, and evidence-based solutions.
The VC emphasized on the importance of integrating traditional practices, including the use of miswak and indigenous herbal knowledge, with modern dental science through proper research.
He also pointed out that advancements in digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, diagnostic imaging, biomaterials, and tele-dentistry offered significant opportunities to improve service delivery and expand access to oral healthcare, especially in the public sector.
He expressed confidence that the conference would strengthen dental education, promote indigenous research, and contribute to policy-relevant outcomes.
Ujjan encouraged faculty members, postgraduate trainees, and students to actively participate in the scientific discussions, acknowledging efforts of the organizing and scientific committees, partner institutions, and sponsors for making the event successful.
The VC also expressed hope that the conference would result in sustainable collaborations and practical recommendations to enhance oral health services in Pakistan.
Dean Faculty of Dentistry, Prof Dr Feroz Ali Kalhoro, while welcoming the participants on behalf of the Faculty of Dentistry, said the conference’s theme reflected contemporary challenges in dental education, research, and clinical practice.
He stated that dentistry at present stood at the intersection of innovation and tradition, with rapid advancements over the past 2 decades, including digital and 3D imaging, dental implants, and rotary endodontics.
He added that the conference aimed to celebrate rich professional traditions while exploring the transformative potential of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and advanced dental materials.
Dr Kalhoro expressed hope that the participants would benefit from lectures, workshops, panel discussions, and hands-on sessions conducted by renowned experts.
He stressed that patient well-being, compassionate care, and lifelong learning remained central to the dental profession.
“By embracing both technology and tradition, dentistry can continue to evolve and deliver better outcomes and wider access to oral healthcare,” he underlined.
The conference is being organized under the able chairmanship of Prof Dr Kashif Ali Channer.
The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Pro VC Pof Dr Seema Morai, Dr Salman Shams, Prof Amir But, Dr Shehzad Mugal, Dr Ashiq Sehto, Prof Dr Jabar Baloch and other eminent doctors.
