KARACHI, Dec 28 (APP):Commissioner of Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, has taken notice of professional beggars at intersections and markets and directed the officials concerned that measures should be taken to prevent beggars at all busy intersections and markets in the city.
He directed the Deputy Commissioners to identify and bring to justice those who support professional beggars, and to involve the Department of Social Welfare and non-governmental welfare organizations in their rehabilitation, said a statement on Sunday.
The Deputy Commissioners were asked to take steps for the implementation of the rehabilitation measures.
On the directives of the Commissioner Karachi, Deputy Commissioner East, Nasrullah Abbasi, and Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, initiated operations in their districts against the beggars and submitted a report on the action taken to the Commissioner.
The report said that on Saturday, actions were taken in various sub divisions of the district East and district South with the support of local police.
Assistant Commissioner Gulraz e Hajri Irfan Nizamani conducted the action in the East district, while Assistant Commissioner civil lines Ahmed Murtaza and Assistant Commissioner Saddar Rana Sofiyan carried out operations in the South district.
According to the Deputy Commissioners’ reports, a total of 84 beggars were arrested. 37 beggars from the East district and 47 from the South district.
All professional beggars were loaded onto buses by Assistant Commissioner Gulraz-e-Hajri Irfan Nizamani and handed over to the Edhi Home.
The report mentions that steps will be taken jointly for the rehabilitation of the beggars handed over to Edhi.
