ISLAMABAD, Dec 24 (APP): The Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) marked International Human Rights Day 2025 in collaboration with UNDP at the Prime Minister’s House, Islamabad, with a distinguished gathering comprising ambassadors, representatives of United Nations agencies, international NGOs, civil society organizations, and senior government officials. The event underscored Pakistan’s continued commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights across all segments of society.
This year, Human Rights Day was celebrated under the theme: “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials”, highlighting that human rights are integral to daily life and form the foundation of an equitable, inclusive, and just society.
Addressing the gathering, Federal Minister for Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, emphasized that human rights are fundamental to democratic governance and social cohesion. He highlighted the Government of Pakistan’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen legal protections for vulnerable groups, enhance access to justice, and promote equal opportunities for all citizens.
“Human rights are not abstract ideals; they are lived realities. Upholding them in every sphere of life ensures dignity, safety, and equality for all,” he stated, calling for a collective commitment to uphold these principles in practice.
Ms. Fauzia Viqar, Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment at the Workplace (FOSPAH), highlighted the critical intersection of human rights with women’s protection and workplace safety. She emphasized the importance of creating harassment-free environments and shared details of FOSPAH’s initiatives aimed at raising awareness, strengthening institutional mechanisms, and empowering women to assert their rights without fear. “Ensuring safe and equitable spaces is not only a statutory obligation but a fundamental human right, integral to everyday life,” she remarked.
In a landmark development, the Ministry of Human Rights, in collaboration with the Research Society of International Law (RSIL), launched the study titled “Harmonising Pakistan’s Laws with International Human Rights Standards.” Ahmer Bilal Soofi, President of RSIL, highlighted that this collaborative effort marks a significant milestone in strengthening Pakistan’s human rights framework.
He noted that the study provides clear recommendations to align domestic legislation with international standards, ensuring legal protections that are effective, comprehensive, and sustainable. “This initiative demonstrates Pakistan’s proactive approach to enhancing human rights through evidence-based reforms and meaningful partnerships,” he stated.
The launch of this study represents a forward-looking step towards legal reforms, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
