From drones to AI cameras: Safe City Islamabad emerges as vigilant eye of capital in 2025

ISLAMABAD, Dec 22 (APP): Safe City Islamabad played a key role in safeguarding the federal capital throughout 2025, conducting more than 97,506 surveillance operations and providing real-time monitoring for major religious, political, diplomatic and public events.
An ICT Police spokesperson told APP on Monday that Safe City Islamabad has evolved into a modern, alert and technology-driven security division, serving as the digital guardian of the capital. Throughout 2025, its advanced camera network monitored unregistered vehicles, suspicious individuals, sensitive installations and public spaces, leading to the successful resolution of numerous high-profile cases, including robberies, terrorism-related incidents and street crimes.

During Muharram-ul-Haram, Safe City ensured security for over 1,000 religious gatherings (majalis) and more than 120 procession routes, with continuous support from drone cameras, smart patrol vehicles and real-time surveillance systems. Similarly, all major national and international events, sports fixtures, political activities and public gatherings in Islamabad were monitored live to ensure public safety.
In 2025, nearly 200 national and international delegations visited Safe City Islamabad, reflecting growing confidence in its modern security framework. To further strengthen crime prevention, 696 AI-based facial recognition and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras were added during the year.
Safe City Islamabad also introduced innovative systems including Hunch Lab and the Golden Hour Response System, enabling immediate action in 326 critical cases, while 63 cases saw initial legal proceedings launched directly from the Safe City control room. Through data analysis, 101 dangerous criminal groups were identified, of which 82 were arrested.
The Hotel Eye System recorded data of over 1.14 million individuals, leading to the arrest of more than 300 proclaimed offenders and court absconders. Meanwhile, the digital control room provided guidance to over 7.04 million citizens during the year.
Through its Complaint Management System, 78,533 complaints were registered and addressed, promoting transparency and public facilitation. The Women and Online Police Station helpline 1815 received 90,534 calls, while Pucar-15 handled over 1.57 million calls, with police providing immediate response in 190,157 cases.
For the first time, a Quality Assurance Desk was established to review emergency calls, improve call-taker training and enhance response standards. The e-Challan system issued 11,372 digital tickets, strengthening enforcement of traffic laws.
Safe City also launched the Online Taxi Verification App and One Info App to enhance citizen safety. The taxi app registered 3,500 passengers, 15,362 drivers and 15,310 taxis, resulting in swift action on 1,495 emergency calls. The One Info App enabled citizens to share 1,206 verified inputs and report 1,475 emergencies, all handled promptly.
To facilitate the Chinese community, WeChat emergency services were introduced, allowing Chinese-speaking police officers to provide fast and secure assistance.
Director General Safe City Islamabad Muhammad Haroon Joiya said that Safe City Islamabad continues to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of key locations, roads and entry-exit points through advanced technology and integrated systems. He added that timely response and coordination with all relevant agencies remain central to maintaining peace, safety and order in the capital.
