LAHORE, Dec 21 (APP): Food adulteration not only endangers lives of millions but also undermines public confidence, damages the credibility of the food industry and tarnishes image in international markets.
Lenient laws and weak enforcement have emboldened criminals, allowing the practice to flourish unchecked.
Convener of Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Committee on Food, Shahid Imran, expressed these views while talking to reporters here Sunday.
He stressed the need for awarding strict punishment to unscrupulous elements indulged in food adulteration, terming the menace a grave threat to public health at large.
The Convener urged the government to further strengthen provincial food authorities by enhancing their legal powers, technical capacity and human resources to ensure effective monitoring and strict implementation of food safety standards.
He called for coordinated action among federal and provincial institutions, regular inspections and swift prosecution of offenders.
He added that ensuring the availability of safe, hygienic and quality food is a collective responsibility and must remain a top national priority.
