Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sets up four committees to protect women, children’s rights

PESHAWAR, Dec 17 (APP): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women has established four important committees for the period 2026 to 2030 to strengthen laws, policies, and support systems for the protection of women’s rights, child protection, and the prevention of gender based violence.
The Child Marriage Legislation Committee will provide guidance to finalize proposed legislation on child marriage.
The committee will work towards approval of the law by the provincial assembly and develop advocacy and awareness strategies in collaboration with parliamentary forums, civil society, and technical institutions.
The Committee on Women’s Property and Inheritance Rights has been formed to strengthen legal and administrative mechanisms for the protection of women’s property and inheritance rights.
 The committee will review implementation challenges, propose improved coordination with revenue, registration, and judicial institutions, and recommend awareness campaigns to improve women’s access to inheritance rights.
The Technical Committee on Women’s Empowerment Policy will guide the development of a comprehensive, evidence based, and practical women’s empowerment policy for the province. The committee will review policy drafts, validate recommendations on various thematic areas, and ensure coordination with government departments, development partners, and civil society.
The Technical Committee on an Integrated Provincial Helpline for Survivors of Gender Based Violence will work on establishing a unified, province wide helpline for women and survivors of gender based violence.
The committee will review existing helplines, recommend an integrated system, propose measures such as standardized services and an easy toll free number, and develop a phased plan for service integration.
Chairperson of the KP Commission on the Status of Women Dr Sumera  Shams said that the formation of these committees reflects the commission’s strong commitment to protecting the rights of women and children, strengthening the legal system, improving access to justice and services, and promoting gender equality in the province.
She added that the committees include experts from various fields, members of the provincial assembly, and representatives of relevant departments, who will hold regular meetings to finalize their recommendations.
