SUKKUR, Dec 17 (APP):A meeting of the National Assembly’s sub committee on food security and research focused on enhancing Pakistan’s date palm production and export potential, chaired by MNA Syed Javed Ali Shah Jillani on Wednesday.
The committee stressed the need for introducing new date palm varieties with higher export potential and better timing to boost farmer earnings. Pakistan is the fifth-largest date producer globally but needs improved varieties and value addition to compete internationally.
A joint research program is planned between PARC and Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) Khairpur, with PARC Chairman Dr. Syed Murtaza Hassan Andrabi leading a team to SALU for further talks.
The collaboration aims to transform the date palm sector into a profitable venture for growers, involving legislative, research, and academic bodies.
