RAWALPINDI, Dec 07 (APP): Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Punjab Salma Butt Sunday conducted surprise inspections of food outlets across Rawalpindi and oversaw a major crackdown against food adulteration, sealing four establishments and destroying a large quantity of tainted spice.
Acting on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, she, accompanied by the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) teams, inspected eateries at Committee Chowk, College Road and the Food Street without prior notice.
A PFA spokesman said inspectors destroyed more than 1,000 kilograms of adulterated red chilli powder at a dumping site after laboratory sampling confirmed the presence of artificial colouring and hazardous adulterants.
He said four food points were sealed for poor hygiene, including the presence of rodent droppings and insects, while a fine of Rs20,000 was imposed on another outlet.
Talking to the media, Salma Butt said the provision of safe, hygienic and adulteration-free food was the top priority of the Punjab government. “The mission of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is a clean, healthy and adulteration-free Punjab, and no negligence will be tolerated,” she said.
She urged the citizens to lodge complaints related to food quality and cleanliness with the Punjab Food Authority helpline 1223 and said enforcement operations would be further intensified to eliminate the adulteration mafia and protect public health.
