LAHORE, Dec 03 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) is actively advancing its Street Food Safety Mission, with 1,242 food handlers receiving licences, 4,138 benefiting from free food safety training and safety kits, and 2,891 undergoing medical screenings to date.
In a media briefing after distributing safety kits at Mini Market, Gulberg, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Salma Butt, outlined the comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of food consumed by the public across the province, under the guidance of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
She stressed that the PFA has rolled out a cutting-edge program focused on ensuring hygiene, safety, and food quality at street food points — whether stalls, carts, ‘dhabas’, kiosks, or mobile vendors—across busy streets, markets, and public spaces.
Ongoing inspections and hygiene training are being conducted in major commercial areas such as Barket Market, Main Market Gulberg, Shadman, Liberty Market, Mall Road, Regal Chowk, and Adda Plot. Further inspections and training drives are also active in Karim Block, Raiwind Road, Hall Road, British Council Road, Shalamar, Gulshan Ravi, and Moon Market. Other areas including Model Town Link Road, Bank Square, Jail Road, Faisal Town, Chauburji, Hafeez Center, Jain Mandir, Neela Gumbad, Lahore Fort, High Court, and Zarar Shaheed Road are also part of the program.
The mission will soon extend across Punjab, from Attock to Rajanpur, to ensure broad improvements in food quality at the grassroots level, Salma Butt added.
She highlighted that small-scale food vendors are being fully supported to help them meet safety standards, with special low-fee licenses introduced to align with the Chief Minister’s vision. Vendors are also being provided with comprehensive instruction booklets detailing food business regulations and safety requirements. Public awareness campaigns focusing on food safety, nutrition for parents, and legal compliance for vendors are also underway.
Salma Butt assured that the PFA would continue its rigorous inspections to ensure that the food available to the public adheres to the highest standards of quality and safety.
