NEW YORK, Sept 5 (APP):An Emirates plane, with about 500 passengers on board, has been quarantined at New York’s John F Kennedy Airport after some passengers reported feeling ill, the airline has said.
Ten passengers were taken to the hospital shortly after flight EK203, an airbus A380, landed Wednesday morning, according to a spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasio. Several other passengers were showing symptoms, and were being held for treatment and possible hospital transport, spokesman Eric Phillips said.
Phillips said sick passengers were being triaged on the plane, while a local ABC News reported the flight crew was being loaded into ambulances. So far, approximately half of the passengers were off the plane and cleared.
Airlines officials said it was not possible at this point in time to confirm whether any Pakistani nationals were aboard the flight.
Local news outlets originally reported that up to 100 of the approximately 500 passengers on board were suffering from coughs and fevers. But the airline said in a statement that only 10 passengers had fallen ill, and “were immediately checked by local health authorities.”
Video from news helicopters showed the jet sitting on the tarmac surrounded by ambulances, vehicles and airport personnel.
Passengers were exiting the plane with their luggage and getting on to buses.
Representatives of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were on the scene.
A New York police counterterrorism division tweeted it appeared to be a “medical situation.”
