LAHORE, Nov 29 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA), under the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif for a “malpractice-free and healthy Punjab,” has endorsed major measures to improve public health and ensure safer dietary practices.
The decisions were made by the PFA’s scientific panel during a meeting chaired by Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid, here on Saturday.
The panel recommended promoting balanced food choices to reduce non-communicable diseases, with a dedicated awareness campaign to guide citizens on healthier diets. A partial ban on hydrogenated oils was approved, and manufacturers of ghee and oils will be required to display saturated fat content on labels. All food products must include complete nutritional information.
To maintain food quality, analytical testing from approved laboratories will be made compulsory, and monitoring of biodiesel plants will ensure compliance with standards. All products sold as milk will be checked, with consumers educated on the difference between real milk and milk-like products.
DG Javaid said strict implementation of the Punjab Educational Institute Food Standards Regulations 2017 will continue, including a ban on advertising junk and sugar-based products for children. Nutrition will also be introduced as a compulsory subject in school curricula to promote healthy dietary habits.
He emphasized that PFA is working round the clock to ensure food in Punjab meets international standards, in line with the Chief Minister’s directives.
