LAHORE, Nov 29 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a landmark initiative to improve waste disposal across the province, directing authorities to install colored dustbins in all markets, shopping malls, commercial centers, government offices, and educational institutions.
Under Phase-I of the ‘Smart Waste Management Process,’ approved in September last year, waste segregation will be carried out systematically: paper and packaging materials in yellow bins; bottles, glass, and laboratory waste in green bins; fruit peels, food waste, leaves, and rotten vegetables in purple/gray bins; iron and metal waste in red bins; and plastic waste in orange bins. The collected materials will be recycled wherever possible, aiming to reduce waste and promote environmentally friendly practices.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will oversee implementation, while educational institutions can coordinate waste collection through the Punjab Management Helpline (1139). The Local Government and Community Development Department will support management of the colored bins.
The CM said that this initiative is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on urban cleanliness and aims to bring Punjab’s waste management standards at par with global best practices.
