Constitutional supremacy, democracy essential for country’s development: Acting President Gilani

MULTAN, Nov 24 (APP):Acting President Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said that lasting political stability, constitutional supremacy and uninterrupted democratic continuity were essential for country’s development. He expressed these views while meeting the newly elected members of the Punjab Bar Council and executive body of Multan High Court Bar and District Bar Association.
Gilani recalled that during his tenure as Prime Minister, he restored the judiciary through an executive order , a step he described as part of the struggle for democracy and constitutional rule. Gilani also added that it was vision of Shaheed Bibi. He said the Charter of Democracy also included agreement on establishing a constitutional court, adding that the 27th Constitutional Amendment would help prevent the removal of a president or prime minister through unconstitutional means.
He observed that past governments and prime ministers were removed unnecessarily, and constitutional safeguards were now the need of the hour.
Discussing security challenges, the Acting President said Pakistan faced threats on its eastern and western borders. He added India’s proxy war and terrorist activities originating from Afghanistan had heightened regional instability, while Pakistan consistently played a responsible role against terrorism.
Gilani said he was nominated as Chairman/Speaker at a recent international conference attended by delegates from over 40 countries, including speakers, deputy speakers, former presidents and former ministers. He added that global parliamentarians strongly condemned terrorism and appreciated Pakistan’s sacrifices.
Referring to the Islamabad blast on the day of the conference, he expressed grief over the loss of 12 lives and said the incident was a reminder that terrorism posed a threat to all humanity.
Gilani said legislation cannot be effective without proper implementation and stressed that both the government and opposition had crucial roles to play.
Highlighting his contributions to education, he said that through Gilani Law College and the Gilani Scholarship Programme, scholarships worth one billion rupees were awarded to 100 students, many of whom are now serving in key academic roles. PhD programs were also underway at the institution.
Accepting the Punjab Bar Council’s invitation to visit, the Acting President said the bar was a pillar of the rule of law. Responding to a request from High Court Bar Association General Secretary Safdar Sarsana, he also pledged to work for the construction of a hostel for lawyers coming from nearby districts. He said he would take up the matter with relevant authorities and announce progress during his next visit, noting that the Multan High Court Bar was one of the largest in the region.
Those who met the Acting President included newly elected Punjab Bar Council members Khawaja Qaiser Butt, Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed, Chaudhry Dawood Ahmed Wains, Malik Khan Langa, and office-bearers of the Multan High Court Bar and District Bar, including President Muhammad Azhar Khan Mughal, General Secretary Safdar Hussain Sarsana, President Javed Ali Dogar, General Secretary Malik Adnan Ahmed, Arif Shah and some others.
