MULTAN, Nov 20 (APP):Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani on Thursday hailed persons with disabilities as the “bright face of society”, stressing that they were playing a vital role in Pakistan’s progress.
He expressed these views while addressing a wheelchair distribution ceremony, hosted by the Society for Special Persons (SSP).
Addressing the gathering, Gilani said Multan is a 5,000-year-old city where the traditions of tolerance, peace, and service to humanity continue to flourish. Recalling his childhood, he noted that he studied at a missionary school where all teachers belonged to the Christian community, reflecting Multan’s enduring interfaith harmony.
The Acting President recalled that there was a time when Pakistani women were not even issued photo identification cards. He said the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) changed millions of lives by giving women identity, financial protection, and empowerment. “Today, these women are supporting their families with dignity,” he remarked.
Thanking the United Nations and international partners for supporting Pakistan during disasters such as earthquakes and floods, Gilani said the true spirit of humanity lies in helping those who cannot return the favour.
During his speech, audience members raised slogans demanding a separate South Punjab province. Responding, Gilani said he was the first person to get resolutions for the new province passed by the Punjab Assembly, National Assembly, and Senate. He reiterated that South Punjab must not be a “province in name only” but should have its own assembly, chief minister, governor, budget, rightful NFC share, and full Senate representation.
He said that during his tenure, 34 per cent of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) budget was allocated to South Punjab, enabling universities, colleges, bridges, bypasses, and various development projects. Gilani added that most people who approach him seek employment, and the only lasting solution is the creation of a new province.
Praising the Society for Special Persons, the Acting President called SSP’s customised wheelchair programme a “life-changing initiative” for the disabled community. Under the scheme, more than 8,000 wheelchairs have been distributed, while over 1,000 individuals have gained self-reliance through training in computer skills, stitching, and vocational trades. Another 300 persons have been trained in wheelchair manufacturing and repair.
He said SSP has also provided wheelchairs, food, and relief goods to disabled persons in flood-affected areas, while women with disabilities in South Punjab are being empowered through skills and business training. Gilani thanked national and international partners for their continued support, saying such efforts have allowed the Multan programme to grow and offer new hope to thousands.
The ceremony concluded with Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani distributing wheelchairs among special persons.
