BEIJING, Nov 15 (APP): Pakistan is emerging as an increasingly influential actor in international affairs, anchored in its strategic geography, diplomatic acumen and unwavering commitment to regional stability. Its evolving role transcends traditional security-centric frameworks, encompassing economic cooperation, counterterrorism collaboration and solidarity with the Global South.

These views were expressed Prof. Cheng Xizhong, Senior Research Fellow at the Charhar Institute, a non-governmental Chinese think-tank on diplomacy and international studies based in Beijing.

He told APP that geographically, Pakistan functions as a pivotal nexus connecting South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. As a core participant in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has transformed it into a regional economic hub, facilitating seamless trade and energy connectivity. This role elevates Pakistan’s status as an intercontinental commercial bridge, attracting diverse investments and enhancing its global diplomatic clout.

In regional security, Pakistan’s contributions are indispensable. As a frontline state in counterterrorism, it has shared actionable intelligence and conducted decisive operations, severely weakening transnational militant networks. Its recent successful mediation in the Middle East underscores growing credibility as a neutral arbiter, highlighting its ability to foster dialogue in volatile geopolitical spaces, he added.

Pakistan, he said, also plays a vital role in amplifying the voices of the Global South. As a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), it consistently advocates for equitable development policies and climate justice, effectively addressing the core concerns of developing nations. Furthermore, its active and sustained participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions further cements its reputation as a responsible stakeholder committed to global security.

While challenges persist, Pakistan’s strategic adaptability has enabled it to convert geopolitical pressures into tangible opportunities. By skillfully balancing relationships with major powers while steadfastly prioritizing regional interests, it has carved a distinctive niche in international diplomacy. As global dynamics continue to shift, Pakistan’s multifaceted role as a connector, mediator and advocate is poised to grow even more vital in the years ahead, he said.
