LAHORE, Nov 13 (APP):The Office of the Punjab Ombudsman has taken swift and decisive action across the province to combat overpricing, the violation of official price lists, and the sale of substandard and unhygienic food items, imposing fines totaling over Rs 8.6 million.
Responding to public complaints, the Punjab Ombudsman ordered field inspections and on-site fact verification across various cities and regions.
The raids were conducted by price control magistrates in collaboration with officials from the Punjab Food Authority.
During the inspections, prices and quality of essential food items—including chicken, fish, meat, milk, eggs, cooking oil, beverages, and fried foods—were thoroughly examined.
In addition to food-related violations, strict measures were also enforced against hotels and restaurants found to be maintaining poor hygiene standards and serving unsafe food.
Fines were levied on transporters using illegal gas cylinders in buses and wagons, as well as on businesses contributing to environmental pollution and maintaining unsanitary conditions.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Ombudsman’s Office stated that these actions were part of the ongoing effort to ensure the public has access to safe, high-quality, and reasonably priced food.
The Ombudsman reiterated that the zero-tolerance policy against profiteering, adulteration, and the sale of substandard goods would continue.
