KARACHI, Nov 11 (APP):The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Karachi, has made medical history by successfully performing a highly complex heart surgery, “Total Arch Replacement with the Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique” on a 16-year-old patient from Khairpur.
According to NICVD spokesman, the groundbreaking surgery lasted over 16 hours and marks a new milestone in Pakistan’s cardiac care.
Due to the extraordinary complexity of the case, an international cardiovascular expert from Turkiye, Prof. Ugursay Kiziltepe, was specially invited to collaborate with the NICVD surgical team. The procedure was successfully executed under his guidance, in partnership with Cardiac Surgeon from NICVD Dr, Khuzaima Tariq, Prof. Asad Bilal Awan, Dr. Fahad (Cardiovascular Surgeon, Trauma Centre Karachi), and Prof. Amin M. Khuwaja, Consultant Anesthesiologist, NICVD.
The young patient is now recovering rapidly and showing encouraging post-operative progress.
The surgery, which would normally cost around Rs. 6 million, was performed completely free of cost, thanks to the generous support of the Government of Sindh.
Prof. Ugursay Kiziltepe said, “It was an honor to work with the skilled and dedicated team at NICVD. This surgery, the first-ever successful “Total Arch Replacement with the Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique” performed in Pakistan, required utmost precision, coordination, and endurance. It represents a landmark in the nation’s medical capabilities and demonstrates NICVD’s readiness to perform advanced and rare cardiovascular procedures that were previously limited to only a few specialized centers globally.”
Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Khuzaima Tariq expressed, “Being part of Pakistan’s first successful Total Arch Replacement with the Modified Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique is a tremendous milestone for both NICVD and our country. This procedure is among the most technically demanding in cardiovascular surgery, requiring replacement of the aortic arch without undergoing DHCA along with the deployment of TEVAR. Its success reflects exceptional surgical expertise, meticulous planning, and the outstanding collaboration of team.
Concluding the historic announcement, Prof. Tahir Saghir, Executive Director NICVD, said:
“This remarkable success is a proud moment for Pakistan’s healthcare sector and a testament to NICVD’s legacy of excellence.
